The geology of the whole region is controlled by the large features of impact origin known as multi-ring circular basins (Hartmann and Kuiper, 1962). Two basic types of terrain are present, and terrae. Basin and crater materials compose most of the terrae. The maria, of volcanic origin, are concentrated in the basins and in their peripheral troughs.
