- The left side of the map is a table of contents. It includes a list of
map layers available for viewing. When you first open the map, a number of layers are
already turned on for viewing.

- You turn map features on or off by clicking the box
next to the feature you want to see. Features
with a check in the box are turned on and are displayed on the map.

- Some map features are detailed and are best displayed after you zoom in
to an
area of interest. Create a custom map by zooming in or out, moving the map display to
another area ,and turning features on or
off.

- The Map Tools in the toolbar above the map allow you to navigate the map.
These are explained below.

- Map features, such as topographic maps, aerial photographs,
shaded-relief, rainfall, and other "area" and "images\imshelp\Image" maps, may cover
up other map features. You may have to turn one of these off to see other features you are
interested in.

The Pan tool lets you pan the map by dragging the
map in any direction with the mouse. To pan, click this tool and move the cursor anywhere
over the map. Then, hold down the left mouse button and drag in any direction. Release the
mouse button to leave the view in the position you want. |

The Zoom In tool allows you to zoom in to a more
detailed view of the map. Select the tool and move the pointer over the map. Click on the
area you want to zoom in to. Another way to zoom in is to create a box over the area you
want to enlarge. To do this, position the pointer where you want one corner of the box to
be, hold down the left mouse button, drag the mouse until the box covers the area you want
to zoom in on, then release the mouse button. The view redraws to show you the area in the
box you defined. |

The Zoom Out tool is the same as the zoom in tool,
but it zooms out from the position you click or the area you drag over. |

The Identify tool allows you to get additional
information about map features. Select the tool and click on a feature to get additional
information. Additional information is not available for all features. |

Select the Previous Extent tool to go back where you
were before you zoomed or panned. |

The Home tool returns the map to the original
geographic extent. |

The Print tool opens the map in a new browser window for printing. |

The Refresh tool reloads the current map. This is useful if there is a problem or you previously
stopped a request. |

The Stop
tool stops the current request. |
