Legend Attribute Label Now

This extension, downloaded from here, allows the user to attribute a theme as it is being created.  This extension can be applied to any theme that has an associated table, including points, lines, and polygons shapefiles or ESRI coverages. You must set up the Legend before using (see below).

Download/Install:  Add the .avx file to the extensions (ext32) directory.  Open the Extensions menu and activate the Legend Attribute Label Now extension.  This will add a several buttons to the toolbar and two features to the theme menu brought up by a right mouse click - Add Attribute and Select Feature.

  • Three of the new buttons include a point, polygon, line and polygon tools. These work exactly as the standard tools, but if you are editing a theme and finish drawing a feature it will automatically ask you to attribute the feature via a pop-up a menu.
  • The flag icon will turn on the labeling feature. After you choose an attribute it will add a text label to the view. The default is to have this feature turned off. Use the button to toggle on and off.
  • To access the quick select and attribute tool use the right mouse button in the View window.

How to Set Up the Legend:

To use the Legend Attribute tool, add a new theme.  Edit the table and create a new field in the table.  Edit the legend of the new theme and change it to graduated color for numbers or to unique value for strings, choosing the newly created field for the Classification Field.  Add the desired number of classes using the Add tool image  button.  Edit the Value for each class, entering the appropriate value or string value. When completed, add one more field, assign it a color and set the Value at null - this is done using the Null button Null tool image.  This is done so that the user can see the location of the newly drawn theme.
