Tool Descriptions

Zoom Toolbar


Refresh: The refresh button requests a new map image from the server reflecting the current state of the image. When the refresh button is enabled multiple changes can be made to the legend, such as toggling layer visiblity or reordering the layers before a new map image is requested. This button can be disabled when a user has a high speed connection to the map server and wants to see legend changes immediately.

Zoom In: Click or drag a rectangle on the map to zoom in to a new map extent.

Zoom Out: Click or drag a rectangle on the map to zoom out to a new map extent.

Pan: Click to recenter or drag to move the map to a new extent at the same extent.

Full Extent: Returns the map to its initial extent.

Zoom to layer: Sets the map extent as the same as that of the current active layer.

Zoom to selected features: Sets the map extent to the extent of the selected features.

Zoom to location: Opens a dialog that allows the user to enter a new map location by hand.

Return to previous extent: Sets the map extent to the extent of the previous pan or zoom operation.

Tools Toolbar


Measure distance: Click to add a new length to be measured, and double click to end measuring.

Locate an address: Opens a dialog in which the user can enter an address and locate it on in the map. This button is only present on the interface if the mapping web server ha a layer the contains geocoding information.

Run a stored query: Opens a dialog in which the user run a predefined query. This button is only present on the interface if the mapping web server has a layer in which stored queries are defined.
The dialog is explained in more detail in the How To Section: How to run a stored query.

Hotlink: Runs hotlinks for the active layer set up by the web-site administrator.

Layer Toolbar


Identify features on a layer: Click on the map to identify the features in the active layer. A dialog will appear containing all feature attributes and its shape will flash. If no features are found then a bell will sound.

Change layer symbology: Opens a dialog in which the user can change the symbology as well as the classification breaks of the active layer.

Select layer features by attributes: Opens a dialog in which the user can construct queries to select features in the active layer.
The dialog is explained in more detail in the how to section: How to select layer features based on their attributes.

Select layer features with a user defined shape: Use tools on this tool menu to create user-defined shapes that will select features in the active layer. Drag to create rectangles and ellipses. Click to add line and polygon segments, double clicking to complete them.

Display selection results: Opens a table dialog which displays the attributes of the selected features of the active layer.

Clear layer selection: Clears the selected features in the active layer.

Graphics Toolbar


Select graphic shapes: Click or drag a rectangle to selecte graphic shapes.

Draw graphic shapes: Use tools on this tool menu to create graphic shapes. Drag to create rectangles and ellipses. Click to add line and polygon segments, double clicking to complete them.
